After returning home from a long weekend in Vermont, there are several things that I miss. I miss the wide open space, the green evergreens and vibrant foliage everywhere. I just love riding by a farm, watching the large black and white cows grazing in the fields. And as silly as it might sound, we even enjoy the smell of the animals. Well, after much deliberation in our house, we have decided to make our little backyard in Medford, MA, more like Vermont. No, we aren’t getting cows, and we already have a small horse (our great dane), but instead we decided to look into owning some chickens.

It turns out that in Medford you can apply for a permit through the board of health. There are specific guidelines that you have to abide by, but the end result is us having chickens.

I was actually quite surprised about all of the positive feedback I received from other Medford residents. A few even requested that we deliver some eggs to them. I think we are going to apply for the permit this year, but wait to get the chicks until the spring. We looked at a few mod chicken coops, and some are really adorable. The eglu being my favorite right now. They are very pricey however, so chances are we will try to create our own. That’s going to be an adventure. I will be sure to update you on the festivities here in Medford come spring.

This week in Massachusetts, we have had lots of apple-ishous activities. The Medford Square Market announced it’s winners for there 1st Annual Apple Bake-Off. Surprisingly there were no apple pie contestants.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to go apple picking this year, I have hear wonderful things about Honey Pot Hill Orchards.  We are going to try to get there this weekend. I hear they have some of New England’s tastiest apples. They also have over 200 acres of orchards, farm animals, and a Hedge maze. My plan is to pack a basket of cheese, breads, and a bit of wine. I am sure the kids are going to have a blast, and the parents too. (don’t forget to stop off at the farm stan, they serve fresh apple donuts, and cider)

This week I also came across some very cute craft ideas to do with the children that incorporate apples.  They are perfect for the fall.  These apple prints were my favorite.

Ha! Not that I am a clean freak by any means, (how can you with 2 kids and a dog) but I recently got turned onto Mrs. Meyers cleaning products. I had seen the Meyers line of products, but was semi turned off by the price. The other day I decided to pick up a pint of Meyers All Purpose Lavender Cleaner. MY GOODNESS! The stuff is truly amazing. I have since cleaned the stairs, wiped down the windows, washed the kitchen floor, and all the wood trim in the house. I am telling you, the smell in itself has me won over. Not to mention it does a kick ass cleaning job.

Some other really easy things we do as a family to help out mother earth are, 1) We bring reusable tote bags to the supermarket. On the rare occasion that we forget them, we reuse the plastic bags when we are cleaning up after our 4-legged family member. 2) Instead of plastic bottles, we use a reusable glass carafe that we always have in the refrigerator. And the 4th grader brings a reusable water bottle to school everyday. And 3) As much as I love the idea of buying organic, during the summer months we opt for local instead. We have the Medford Square Market every Thursday from 2-7pm were we can get all of our veggies, and bread for the week. The produce is the freshest, and it also reduces the energy costs of shipping worldwide.

So you see, with minimal effort there are many things you can do to help out. As a family, see what you can do to REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE.

Well, I just went online to take a peak at it, and it is sorta cool.  Basically each Cube World contains a little pixelated stick man who lives and plays inside. There are four characters to collect and each one has a different hobby: Slim plays with a stick, Dodger enjoys kicking his ball, Scoop interacts with his dog, and Whip is a master at rope tricks. We are now heading into our 2nd full week of school. The bus seems to be going smoothly, my son likes his teacher (so far), and he is making new friends. What could be wrong? Well, we aren’t even into our 2nd week, and already he has come home with the fundraising envelope, displaying pages of scented candles, and wrapping paper.

By the end of last year I really thought I had had it. He was coming home every month with a new fundraiser. One worse than the next. So, I looked online and found a wonderful article. It sums it up perfectly.

PTOs and School Fundraising

The first week of school, the new and firm backpack is always stuffed with notes. Pickup times, orders for chocolate, 1% or whole milk, a list of teacher expectations. But I feel it in the air. It’s about to happen….

Fundraising
The second week. There it is. The big sign on the big blue doors. “Wrapping paper fund drive begins September 15th!” The money drive begins. Each year I am ambivalent. Should I give or not? How much? How often?

I know that PTOs exist to help parents make schools better for their kids, but last year our PTO suggested that each family donate $100 to give our Newton, Massachusetts kids a great education. I was blown away. “I thought that’s what my tax dollars were going for,” I muttered to myself. “If a school needs that much extra, then it really isn’t getting what it needs from the old U.S. of A.,” I say to three mothers milling around after the morning drop-off. The raised eyebrows made me feel cheap and petty. I did the math. If, let’s say, there are 300 families and each one gives $100, then the school would have $30,000. That’s extra?

So I told a friend
“Most Americans really believe that they care about children’s education,” said Cathy, whose daughter is in a Brookline, Massachusetts elementary school. “But if you look at how money is doled out, what shape the schools are in, what scores kids are getting on standardized tests, and how few computers are really in the classroom, taxes do not cover the basics in our schools. Forget about art, music, and foreign language. It’s pathetic.”

This issue isn’t unique to New England. A few years ago in New York, there was a big hubbub because parents from a wealthy community gave substantial sums of money to their school. Parents from a less wealthy district called foul, claiming that it’s not democratic for one school to have more money than another. Coast to coast, fundraising to make schools better is no simple issue.

Fundraising: superficial or crucial?
“I think the PTO here is superfluous,” said one parent from Concord, Massachusetts. “Meaning exactly what?” I ask. “Well, I realize that PTOs are set up to help schools, teachers, and kids, but the one here spends money on things I think are silly. They just purchased new curtains for some classrooms. Curtains! How about a poetry program? A little music? That’s what gets cut.”

She gives her money to the Concord Educational Fund. It’s an offshoot of the PTA that provides “Enrichment Grants” for teachers. “Teachers write up imaginative programs for their classes that relate to diversity issues or the arts. These ideas can get funded. I’d just rather see my money go to that than to interior decoration.”

But there’s another side to fundraising. One teacher told me that in her town, there is a PTA Teacher’s Fund. “Teachers always spend their own money on practical supplies, markers, special reading materials, even gaffer’s tape. My classroom is held together by gaffer’s tape. But the school won’t or can’t pay for those things. So the PTA parents, God bless ‘em, give each teacher $100 a year to purchase small items for the classroom. You might say that $100 a year is small potatoes, but to us, it makes a huge difference.”

Diane, a mother from Arlington, Massachusetts, spends a lot of time on her hands and knees, usually cutting out paper dolls or making playdough castles with her kids. But when she dropped to the floor at a school where she was volunteering, she got stuck. Literally. “The carpets were filthy. Not like they hadn’t been vacuumed for a week or even a month…like for years. And you know kids. They eat in the classroom, too. The floors were just plain gross.”

So, she looked into the problem
“According to their contract, the custodians didn’t have to vacuum. The school said it was the teacher’s job. Understandably, the teachers didn’t do it. Anyway, I got an estimate of how much it would cost to clean the carpets, and as a PTO member, I asked that it be taken out of the PTO budget, which it was. There are clean carpets…for now.”

“In general, I think there are a lot of very piecemeal, somewhat meaningless fundraisers,” muses Diane. “But there are others that really are important. In Arlington, the PTO had dues. I think it was $5 in the past, and people who wanted to give more could do so.” “It should come out of our taxes,” I say. “Yes, taxes should cover these things, but they don’t. It’s our job as parents to just deal with it.”

What’s the answer?
To me there’s a big difference between $100 and $5. If we really need to give large amounts to a school, then we need to take a second look at federal spending. But sometimes, a dime’s worth of volunteering can mean a dollar’s worth of making a difference.

Why it’s important
When I was a child, my mother used to come to my school and read stories. I felt so important on the days she was there. Last year, I asked her why she did it. “I think we should all leave the world a better place than we found it. I think the same thing about schools.”

She’s right. Whether it’s money or time we give, whether it’s $5 or $100, whether it’s through the PTO or on our own steam, what’s important is that we leave our schools in better shape than when our kids entered them. Because it really does make a difference.

I think this is the winner. The great part is that it can really grow with your family. Not to mention that they have super sassy colors like lime, and orange. The biggest downside… it’s going to cost you about $250-$275 (chair + cushion). But it will last you forever.

So officially it has been 7 months, almost 8, and the baby weight hasn’t come off. I actually don’t think it’s considered baby weight anymore. Well, I decided to take a class for me + the baby. I just signed up for a Pilates-infused water work-out for Moms + Babies -Toddlers ages 4 months through 24 months. It’s called MOMswim, and it allows Moms to enjoy a great workout while Babies/Toddlers experience water exploration. MOMswim includes singing,“water dancing”, and signing (ASL) with babies close to us at all times.
